How often must a fire alarm system be tested?
BS 5839-1 calls for a different manual call point to be tested every week, with a competent person carrying out a service inspection at least every six months. In practice we recommend a six-monthly service split into two visits a year, plus the weekly user test by the responsible person, and we can take care of all of it on a planned schedule.
What is BS 5839?
BS 5839 is the British Standard for fire detection and fire alarm systems. Part 1 covers commercial and non-domestic buildings, and Part 6 covers dwellings including HMOs and apartments. It sets out how a system should be designed, installed, commissioned and maintained, and defines the system categories (such as L1 to L5 for life protection and P1 to P2 for property protection).
Do you take over and maintain existing fire alarm systems?
Yes. We carry out takeover surveys on existing fire alarm systems regardless of who installed them. We inspect the panel, detection and wiring against BS 5839, log any defects, bring the system up to standard with any remedial works, and then put it on a planned maintenance and monitoring contract. We can also handle your CCTV, intruder and other servicing at the same time.
What grade and category of fire alarm do I need?
It depends on the building, its use and its fire risk assessment. Offices and commercial premises usually need a Category L or P system to BS 5839-1, while HMOs and flats are graded under BS 5839-6 (for example Grade A or Grade D). Can a fire alarm integrate with our AOV or smoke control system?
Yes. We design fire alarm and smoke control together so detection on the fire floor triggers the right vents in the right sequence. As a single installer for both your fire alarm and your AOV and smoke ventilation, we make sure the two systems are commissioned and certified as one coordinated cause-and-effect.
